Eye Exams

Vision Exams

We offer routine eye exams for individuals without known eye disease or symptoms. During these exams, your eyes will be evaluated for corrective needs (glasses or contact lenses) and any signs of potential eye disease. If any abnormalities are detected, further medical testing may be required during a subsequent visit, which would be billed to Alberta Health Services.

Routine eye exams for patients aged 18 and under or 65 and over are covered by Alberta Health Services. Patients aged 19 to 64 should check with their private insurance for vision benefits.

Medical Eye Exams

This comprehensive examination is medically essential for diagnosing and treating eye diseases and conditions. It aims to identify the cause of symptoms and determine necessary treatments or referrals. Medical eye exams assess conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and other potentially sight-threatening diseases. All medical or emergency ocular visits are covered by AHS, regardless of age.

Paediatric Eye Exam

A pediatric eye exam includes specialized tests like cycloplegic refraction, which isn’t typically part of adult exams. Vision issues are often more prevalent in childhood. Uncorrected vision problems in children can hinder academic, social, and athletic development, but quality eye care can help them overcome these challenges, enabling them to thrive.

Diabetic Eye Exam

AHS covers annual diabetic eye exams for Albertans, which include a dilated fundus exam and additional tests to detect diabetic retinopathy. Referrals to retinal specialists are made if necessary.

Speciality/Regular Contact Lens Fitting

A comprehensive eye exam is required before a contact lens fitting. Contact lenses can correct various refractive errors, including astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and presbyopia. Our staff and doctors will provide training and education on the care, handling, and hygiene of contact lenses. Once a lens that fits well, provides clear vision, and is comfortable is found, the doctor will finalize the prescription.

Custom-fit scleral lenses significantly improve visual acuity and comfort for those with corneal irregularities from refractive surgery complications, keratoconus, astigmatism, dry eye, or other conditions. Scleral lenses rest on the eye’s sclera and vault over the cornea, reducing friction and discomfort by creating a new optical surface.

Fitting these specialty lenses may require several follow-up visits to ensure the perfect fit. If interested, please consult your eye doctor.

Glaucoma Testing and Co-Management

If your eye doctor notes any suspicious findings relating to glaucoma at the routine eye exam, they will bring you back for further testing and follow-up examinations. These tests and followup examinations are covered by AHS. Some tests include peripheral vision testing, scanning of the optic nerve, measuring corneal thickness, checking eye pressure, assessing the aqueous drainage system and a dilated fundus exam. If required a referral will be sent to the glaucoma specialist.

Surgical Co-Management

When your doctor refers for any surgical intervention such as cataract surgery, your surgeon’s office will coordinate with our office to arrange any necessary post op follow-ups and exams needed.

Refractive Surgery Referrals

If interested please speak to your doctor to send out a referral for consultation for refractive surgery (Lasik/PRK) or refractive lens exchange.

I came to see Dr. Kiani to get a pair of prescription sunglasses. Her and her staff took such great care of me during my visit. I had such a great experience that I came back the same week to buy a pair of reading glasses. Thank you!

FAQ

Frequently Ask Questions.

Explore our FAQ section for answers to commonly asked questions.

It's recommended to have a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years, or as advised by your optometrist.

Optometrists specialize in primary vision care, prescribing glasses, contact lenses, and detecting common eye diseases. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye and vision care, including surgery and treating complex eye conditions.

An eye exam conducted by an optometrist can determine if you need vision correction. They will assess your visual acuity and prescribe glasses or contact lenses as needed.

If you experience sudden vision changes, eye pain, or injuries, seek immediate medical attention by contacting your eye care provider or visiting the nearest emergency room.

Practice the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. Additionally, ensure proper lighting, adjust screen settings, and use computer glasses if necessary.

Common signs include blurry vision, eye redness or irritation, eye pain, double vision, flashes of light, and seeing halos around lights. If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an eye exam promptly.
